Smart Choice Initiative is a twelve-month (12) program designed to control juvenile delinquency by providing counseling, referrals, community service projects and alternative solutions. Macon Smart Choice Initiative believes that by decreasing the number of delinquency and providing alternative programs will help prevent juvenile crime and improve public safety within the neighborhoods. The mission of the program is to deter the offending juvenile from going to court in cases of non-violent misdemeanors and enroll him/her in the Police Activity League (PAL) Program - A structured educational and recreational program. After choosing to participate in the Smart Choice Program, each juvenile will be required to do ten (10) to fifty (50) hours of community service as issued by the Juvenile Case Manager. These requirements will be issued in lieu of court.
This year there were twenty- five (25) Juvenile that was enrolled in the Smart Choice Program. All completed the program until the ended of the program in September 05. The program was very successful, however the government funded the program and the budget was cut which cut the program.
Although the program was cut this year the enrollee were still able to get the enrichment training and mentors that was needed to help keep them on the straight and narrow. Life skill training was administered bi-monthly to enable the juvenile ways to handle peer pressure and other bad choices. Daily calls were made to parents by the case manager to ensure the juvenile progress at home as well as in the school; nine the program is required to do ten to fifty hours of community service, which is issued by the case manager. Six hundred and thirteen hours (613) of community service was completed this year. Nine hundred and thirty (930) calls were made this year. Monthly home visit were made to do a comprehensive assessments of the juvenile to determine the strengths and weaknesses of their current situations. |
