The program is the most profound example of a community and law enforcement partnership in modern times. This relationship provides law enforcement personnel with a valuable observation and reporting system, which is essential in our modern society. The program consist of neighborhood residents who patrol within the City of Macon in an effort to reduce crime in their communities and provide other volunteer services, to serve their community as directed under the program. All members must complete a four hours training session on patrolling techniques and observational skills before officially being considered a member. This program has an executive board where citizen holds all the positions, regular meetings of the Citizen on Patrol are held every second Thursday of each month at 6:00pm . Youth and Intervention (Officer Willie Brown) is the Coordinator for the program.
The information that is provided by the Citizen on Patrol members from them is patrolling on the streets assist law enforcement efforts in the prevention of criminal activity. The different communities benefits from this partnership in two ways. One way is the citizens that are member of the program gain a sense of purpose and satisfaction in having an influence over the quality of life, and knowing that they play a significant role in trying to reduce / stop criminal activities in the City of Macon . This year the members of the Citizen on Patrol have provided the police department with three thousand one hundred and twenty-five (3,125) patrol hours, which includes several hours on the armed robbery detail to help deter crime during the Christmas Holidays. This program was designed for citizen to be the eyes and ears of the police department. Currently there are fifty-six (56) active members and forty-one (41) inactive members enrolled in the Citizen on Patrol Program a 44% increase since 2004. The members patrol twice a day once in the morning, and once in the evening. Mr. George Thomas presently serves as the president and has been an active member since 1980's. |
