On August 2, 2007 at approximately 3:30 a.m. a 911 call was received from a pay phone at the corner of Napier Avenue and Ayers Road. The male caller reported that a man had been shot at Hidden Lake Apartments in a black vehicle. When officers arrived they found 21-year-old Mark Joseph (M.J.) Lyons in the drivers seat of a black 1992 Acura Integra in front of building S of Hidden Lake Apartments. Lyons had been shot in head and was pronounced dead at the Medical Center of Central Georgia.

It was formed in 1859, shortly after the city was founded and currently has an authorized strength of 305 sworn officers and 101 civilian employees. In November 1988, the department had the honor and distinction of becoming the 82nd law enforcement agency in the nation to be accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Incorporated.
