TRAINING UNIT

The Macon Police Department recognizes the importance of training and is committed to providing the best training available to all personnel.

Training has been cited as the most important responsibilities in any law enforcement agency. Training serves three broad purposes

• First, well-trained officers are generally better prepared to act decisively and correctly in a broad spectrum of situations.

• Second, training usually results in greater productivity, self-reliance, and effectiveness.

• Third, it fosters cooperation and unity of purpose.

NEW OFFICERS:

The Macon Police Training Academy structure is Para-military. The Academy offers a rigorous and intense training program for new police applicants to include:

• A twelve (12) week program with courses such as cultural diversity, interpersonal communication, verbal judo, community engagement, problem solving, report writing, firearms, EVOC, criminal law, courtroom demeanor/testimony, mechanics of arrest, crime scene processing, health/wellness etc.
• A ten (10) week training program at the State Mandate Academy. Reinforcing and expanding upon all Law Enforcement Issues.
• A three (3) month training assignment with individual Field Training Officers (FTO’s).

As officers gain experience and knowledge through education and training, they may become eligible for assignment to one or more of the Department’s Specialized Units.

LATERAL TRANSFERS:

The Macon Police Department welcomes all mandated officers. An officer mandated by the state of Georgia and is up-to-date on required annual training hours will have to complete various parts of the Macon Police training program at the Training Academy before being released to a Field Training Officer. If an officer has been mandated in Georgia and has not completed the required annual training hours then the officer will have to complete all necessary training and portions of the Macon Police Academy before being released to a Field Training Officer.

An out of state mandated officer would attend the twelve-week program and Regional State Mandate Academy that consist of ten-weeks of training, upon completion released to a Field Training Officer.

EXISTING OFFICERS:

In-service courses for sworn personnel/civilians are offered annually at the Macon Police Training Academy. Sworn officers are required to attend 40 hours of in-service training.
