The Pawn Unit is staffed by two (2) Sergeants. This unit is responsible for monitoring the ten (10) pawnshops inside the city limits of Macon. They receive approximately 150,000 pawn cards a year from various pawnshops. They check the pawnshops to make sure pawn cards are turned in and that each business is operating inside the state laws for pawn shops. The pawn unit is responsible for running items that have serial numbers through NCIC to check for stolen. They are also responsible for putting the pawn cards into the computer system.
From January 2007 to May 2007, 24,000 items were put into the computer system. There are approximately 4,000 guns a year that are checked for stolen through NCIC. This unit works hand in hand with other law enforcement agencies to track offenders who are pawning items within our jurisdiction. This unit is also responsible for running cars that are towed into the City impound lot as well as the scrap cars to various scrap iron lots.
