Criminal Investigations Division
CRIME LAB

The Macon Police Department Crime Lab consists of one (1) Crime Lab Director, three (3) Crime Scene Technicians, one (1) AFIS Coordinator, one (1) Computer Forensic Specialist, and one (1) Evidence Clerk.

Although a part of the Criminal Investigations Division, Crime Scene Technicians are subject to be called upon by persons and property detectives and any of the four (4) precincts or other units of the department at any time. In addition to the collection and preservation of evidence, the crime lab personnel maintains evidence for court cases and records that go along with each piece of evidence collected. The Crime Lab Unit works closely with both the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Investigation Crime Labs. Each Crime Scene Technician is skilled in photography, latent print processing, latent print identification, marijuana identification, handling of biological and preservation of DNA evidence. The Crime Labs AFIS Coordinator is responsible for the submission of latent prints into the Automated Fingerprint Identification System for comparison and matching of prints to a particular offender. Proper handling of all paperwork is essential for the successful prosecution of a case. The Evidence Clerk is responsible for the intake and handling of evidence, maintaining chain-of-custody on evidence vouchers, gun traces, and other paperwork associated with a case, and maintaining the evidence database.

PICKING UP PROPERTY:

Evidence Property – Evidence being held by the crime lab will require a written release from the Macon Police officer/or detective or from the Bibb County District Attorneys office. The owners of the property must make contact with the officer/detective or the DA's office directly in order to get the written release.

Found Property – Found Property will be held for 90 days from the date it was received.

After the 90 days the property will be destroyed or auctioned pursuant to Georgia Law. To claim found property you must have proof of ownership and valid ID is required.

HOURS OF OPERATION:

The crime lab is open to the general public for business from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM Monday through Friday. The crime lab is closed on Saturdays, Sundays and most Holidays.
