The Area I Investigation Unit is the investigative branch of Area I Command and is under the supervision of Lieutenant Ellis Sinclair. The Investigation Unit follows up on property crimes initially reported to uniformed officers. Investigators respond to crimes by seeking solutions through both traditional and innovative methods of crimes by seeking solutions through both traditional and innovative methods of police/citizens interactions. The primary function of the unit includes the investigation of property crimes, overseeing the forensic processing of crime scenes, and criminal prosecutions. The investigators assigned to the unit specialize in, and investigate a wide variety of crimes including Computer/Internet crime, identity theft, financial crime, as well as Burglary and Auto Theft. This is accomplished by one or more of the following methods: Interviewing in detail the victim (s), witness, an potential suspect (s), collecting and preserving evidence, conducting surveillance, and obtaining search warrants.
Not all cases involving follow-up are referred are to the Investigation Unit. The Patrol Division investigates cases not requiring follow-up. If you wish to check the progress of your case, and an investigator has not contacted you should call the investigative unit of your area where the incident occurred.
The unit is composed of a Lieutenant, two investigative Sergeants, and nine investigators. The Investigations Unit reports to the Area I Command Major. The office is staffed Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 5 PM. However, an investigator is on-call 24 hours a day, seven days a weeks, to respond to all major crime scenes.
