Animal Control
SPAYING AND NEUTERING/RABIES/DOG FIGHTING

SPAYING AND NEUTERING:

Animal Control makes sure that animals are spayed and neutered to prevent the birth of unwanted litters. Spaying and neutering pets is a big part of being a responsible pet owner. Unwanted and uncontrolled animals threaten and bite people. They spread disease, destroy property, cause accidents and suffer from neglect - as well as produce millions of unwanted young across the nation. Animal Control authorities have to make some hard decisions each day about unclaimed pets.

Way to many pets are euthanized each year. City residents can make a difference by being responsible pet owners.

HELP STOP DOG FIGHTING:

In a continued effort to stop illegal dog fighting, Macon City Animal Control asks that citizens report ads in local newspapers offering to sell dogs or puppies bred for fighting. Look for advertisements for pit bulls that carry the terms "game," "game bred," or other terms that may imply the seller may be dealing in fighting dogs.

If you find an ad you think may be promoting the sale of dogs bred for fighting, please send it to the Southeast Regional Office (SERO) of the Human Society of the United States (HSUS) at:

HSUS-SERO
1624 Metropolitan Circle, Suite B
Tallahassee, FL 32308

If the HSUS-SERO agrees that the ad is suspicious, it will then contact the newspaper that printed the ad and request that it institute a policy to screen out such ads. HSUS-SERO is committed to persuading other newspapers currently carrying such ads to do the same.

RABIES:

To keep you and your pets safe from rabies, the Georgia Division of Public Health makes several suggestions. First, it is important to visit your veterinarian on a regular basis and keep rabies vaccinations up-to-date for all cats, ferrets, and dogs. Second, maintain control of your pets by keeping cats and ferrets indoors and keeping dogs under control. Third, spaying and neutering pets helps reduce the number of unwanted pets that may not be properly cared for or vaccinated regularly. Lastly, call Animal Control to remove stray animals from your neighborhood since these animals may be ill. Signs of sickness or rabies include hair loss, mucous in the eyes or nose, excessive salivation, dementia, or aggressive behavior. Daytime activity of otherwise nocturnal animals is occasionally a sign of sickness. However, during spring and early summer, while offspring are being born and raised, it is not rare to find wildlife active during the day, especially on overcast days or on wooded lots. Remove bird feeders, pet food, and access to other types of food or water to decrease the chances of wildlife interaction with pets and people.
